Snorkeling photo tips

Updated: Jun 20, 2020

Snorkeling in the Athenian Riviera can be as fun and fascinating as doing the same in other remote islands of Greece! Multicolored fish, strange creatures, spectacular seabed landscapes. However, underwater shots require a minimum of know-how. Experience Eco collected for you some simple tips to get you started or progress in snorkeling photography:

Snorkeling tip 1: Equipment

Action cams: They are small, light, highly resistant, and make it easy to film sports activities on land or underwater. The newer models of cameras claim to be waterproof without housing (ex GoPro 6/7). However, we suggest (Experience Eco) to use the extra waterproof housing for your action cam even if you have the latest models.

Waterproof mobile housing cases: Most cases are designed in transparent plastic (polycarbonate). A number of features (waterproof push-buttons, small levers) are incorporated sometimes to access the mobile ’s release mechanism or settings. Watertight cases can be bulky, however and hard to handle when snorkeling.

Before your snorkeling activity we strongly recommend to check for one more time your waterproof housing:

  • Take a piece of paper, paper towel, or anything else that will show when it gets wet, and close it inside the case. Make sure it’s smaller than your phone and doesn’t get caught in the seal. Bonus points for writing on the paper with a water-soluble marker that will run when water soaks in.

  • Make sure all of the snaps, covers, or plus are in place. Some cases snap open to reveal the charge port or headphone jack.

  • Hold the case under a faucet for a few moments. Check to make sure the paper is still dry.

Snorkeling tip 2: Water/light conditions

Light and water clarity are essential Without any doubts, it is near the surface, and on the first meters deep, that the light conditions are the best. The more the subject (be it a fish or any underwater landscapes) is illuminated by the sun, the more you should be able to get out of the water with a nice and clear shot!

Suspended particles (which you tend to stir when you step on the bottom, for example) can also spoil some shots, especially those taken with flash. In general, we recommend avoiding using the flash as much as possible, especially when you have some good light. Be as stable as possible! This is probably the most sensitive part for taking successful snorkeling shots. From the surface, it’s pretty easy. By floating, only the ripples of the water make us move. Hold your device (or pole) firmly, avoiding any sudden movement. Surface pictures are generally of great interest only on shallow bottoms, less than 2m. Indeed, beyond, you will tend to photograph subjects “from above”.

Finally, wear your smile and positive energy and enjoy unforgettable snorkeling in Athens!!
